In the 1970's, ragtime enjoyed an international revival, and "The Entertainer" became particularly well-known when it was used as the theme music the 1973 Oscar-winning film The Sting, reaching #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was received well by audiences, players, and critics at the time, but fell out of popularity in the 1920's as ragtime transformed over time into jazz. While he did not invent ragtime, Joplin refined and elevated the genre by combining the syncopation of African-American folk music and 19th-century European romanticism.
